Welcome to Laurier Heights

Laurier Heights is a mature, west Edmonton neighbourhood that is situated along a bend in the Edmonton river valley and is one of the highest elevated neighbourhoods in the city. As such, Laurier Heights has beautiful views, quick access to river valley trails and parks and the Edmonton Valley Zoo, one of the city’s main attractions. Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park and Buena Vista Park offer multi-use trails, an off-leash dog park and connection via a footbridge to William Hawrelak Park. While Laurier Heights boasts stunning natural surroundings, it is also close to Whitemud Drive providing a quick commute to other parts of the city and to commercial services and amenities.

Laurier Heights is located east of 149th street with 87th avenue to the north and Whitemud Drive to the south. The North Saskatchewan river valley makes up the western and some of the southern border, because the neighbourhood is picturesquely nestled in a bend of the river. Laurier Heights was named after Sir Wilfred Laurier, Canada’s 7th Prime Minister. Before World War two, the area that is now Laurier Heights was mostly pasture with a scattering of houses and industry. In the decade that followed the war, Laurier Heights went under huge development. The neighbourhood was developed using a curvilinear road system, instead of the structured grid, which created quiet and peaceful residential streets.

Residents of Laurier Heights enjoy access to the river valley parks, the Edmonton Valley Zoo and the variety of programs offered at the Laurier Heights Community League, but besides the odd shop or cafe, commercial development within the neighbourhood has been minimal. There is a huge variety of eateries, shops, healthcare and other community services just a 5-minute drive west including Meadowlark Health and Shopping Centre and West Edmonton Mall. Laurier is home to Laurier Heights School, 3 churches and a range of seniors housing and community services at Canterbury Foundation.
